Over the years we have restored upright and grand pianos for clients that have a family connection with their piano, perhaps it was bought many years ago by parents for their child to learn on and now the child is now an adult and has inherited the piano but finds that due to many years that have passed that the instrument is no longer fit for purpose, usually by not keeping in tune.
Over time the tuning pins can become looser and causes the piano to not hold its tuning. When a piano gets to that stage, its time to dispose of the piano and replace it or have the piano restored so that it would provide many more years of trouble free service. In this way the player still plays the piano that they learnt on and that is something that is important to many people. It may be that it may only require a nominal amount of work, such as adjustments to get it in service again but it also might be a candidate for full restoration which can cost nearly the price of a new one but for some, this is worth the outlay to retain that priceless special connection with their growing up.
In all cases of involved repair,I would initially need to inspect the piano to see if it is worth spending money on it.In many cases, its not worth considering a restoration if the piano was not a good quality one in the first place but this question can only be answered with a visit to appraise it.
